EXPLORING NUMBER PATTERNS

Use this 100 number chart to create a number pattern. Copy this number chart picture to ClarisWorks (painting) or to HyperStudio, then use the paint bucket tool to put a color in each number cell to create a number pattern. Here are some different number patterns you can explore:

  1. What kind of pattern will you make if you color all the numbers that are even? What is the sequence of numbers?

  2. What kind of pattern will you make if you color all the numbers that are odd? What is the sequence of numbers? (Is this pattern alike or different from the even number pattern?

  3. How can you create a number pattern that shows diagonals? What is the sequence of numbers?

  4. How can you create a number pattern that shows a checkerboard pattern? What is the sequence of numbers?

  5. Here are some of our number patterns designs that our classroom created. E-mail us some of your number pattern sequences and designs. Or just send us your designs, and then see if we can guess your pattern!

MORE NUMBER PATTERNS TO EXPLORE:

What kind of pattern will you make if you color all the numbers that are factors of 12 and 48? What is the sequence of numbers? Can you guess about how many number cells you will color?

What kind of pattern will you make if you color all the numbers that are multiples of 6 and 7? If you use a different color for the 6 multiples and a different color for the 7 multiples, will you have a number cell with two colors? If you use yellow for 6 and blue for 7, what color would you use for the intersecting number cell?

If x + y = 40, what number pattern could you create for x and y? What is the sequence of numbers? (example, you could use 10 for x and 30; use a different color for x and a different color for y)
